The Echo hatchback was never sold in T he S tates, yet here I am SEENTing one with WA plates. These are real nice, the sedan and coupe just look... Improper.

The 2 door was especially awkward, small car with trunk never works.
I’ve seen WA plated Acura EL, not as drastic as a 5 door Echo though.

I like the 3 door;
a friend had one and we rode down to Granville Island in Vancouver in it, This was me in the backseat on the freeway for an hour;

I still prefer the 3dr. This one is caged & stripped, coil overs, brakes, & RE-71Rs. It’s really quick.

The Platz is hideous. Vitz looks way better.

Report them to the NHTSA so it can be confiscated and crushed.
IF WE CAN’T HAVE OUR AVANTS AND R33s YOU CAN’T HAVE YOUR DUMB YARIS HATCH EITHER THEN

Nah, solidarity with Canadian imports. Fuck the feds, drive all the illegal cars.

How do people manage to do this? And more importantly, WHY, for something so...plebeian ?
Recently I saw one of these with WA plates out here in PDX -

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the Echo hatch and I’m still pissed they never sold it down here! I’m so glad to see one in the US! I love the Echo hatchback, and that pretty blue color is fucking awesome! So is the gold one.
![]() 03/08/2019 at 13:56 |

It probably
meets US standards since Canadian
standards
are essentially identical to ours

Because it’s fucking AWESOME!!!!!! I love the Echo hatchback! Toyota makes the best cars, and the Echo hatchback is a fun sporty cute lil economical cars with lots of room inside for lots of good stuff and fun times :o)
The Orlando is pretty cool, too. You could even get a manual transmission it. A 7-passenger 3-row 3-pedal manual crossover MPV thing

It also dances on ice.

Someone did the same thing with a gasoline B-Class, albeit a little further from the Canadian border.

You'd still have to get a letter from Toyota acknowledging that for it to be fully legal.

There might already be a placard under the hood or
in the door sill, wherever they put it, indicating it meets our standards.

I wonder how they got an Orlando in. It is extremely likely the Echo hatch is legal to import since the sedan was sold here, and the hatch would meet the requirements as a similar vehicle but different trim level.

Although you might fear the bureaucracy involved with importing a car from the U.S. to Canada, it isn’t as hard as you probably expect. The first step is to talk to the manufacturer of your car and ask for a letter confirming that it’s substantially similar to a U.S. model. Manufacturers are familiar with these letters, and getting them to write one shouldn’t be hard. Armed with the letter and your Canadian title and registration, you should be able to register your vehicle. If your car is leased or financed in Canada, you may also need permission from your bank to register it in the U.S.

My grandfather (b. 1925) owns one. With Yaris badges obviously, because Europe. You hardly ever see some who isn’t retired in one of these.

Did you also see Ghee Buttersnaps?

I had a B180 as a rental in Germany/France and really liked it.

The Yaris we have at work is probably one of the worst cars I’ve ever driven. Steering feel is vague at best, the grabbing point of the clutch is non existant, it's slow as shit (even as a defender of low hp cars the damn thing is super slow) and shifting is like stirring cake dough. Sorry:(

I love those little first-gen Echo hatches...considered one when I ended up purc
hasing the Accent, but I see many around and none for sale (at least around here) so they must be good enough people want to keep them a long time! :D
I especially like them in that color - my favorite!

Oooh, a Yaris!
Sensible, small, very plasticky, not exactly quick.

Mine had the panoramic sun roof, it was awesome! Also, the interior folds down like a Swiss army kn if e, it was really handy. If they decide to sell ‘em in the U.S. I’d buy one in a heartbeat.
My dad liked mine so much he bought one too, albeit without the turbo. He eventually sold the car in favor of an Avalon, something I never let him live down. My mom sold the Avalon and picked up a RAV4.

I’d like to thank you for using ‘snuck’ rather than ‘sneaked’. A much better word, regardless of pedants will tell you is correct. Keep fighting the fight!
Also I wonder if there’s any chance Toyota wrote a “substantially similar” note for it. My understanding is that is probably is substantially similar as required by the law , but that they normally wouldn’t issue the note unless it was basically identical because while the risk may be low, there’s also not any benefit for them.

OK OK, but tell me - do you love the echo hatch? :P

Reminds me of years ago, when I spotted a Mexican market Chevrolet Astra with New York plates on it. Silver 5-door.
Now, mind you, this was back in 2006, two years before the Astra was sold as a Saturn.

the folks that used to live across the street from us had one of the red 4dr sedans - rode in a couple times - lots of headroom for a “small” car, but the side to side wobble/rocking was bad...
